「移項」に当たる一語の名詞は用例コーパスと参照に出てこない。移項の意味の transposition は用例コーパスにも OpenStax にも出てこない（transposition は MIT OCW 18.01 の講義に別の意味でわずかに出てくるだけ）。同じ操作を「両辺から引く／両辺に足す」（subtract 3 from both sides ／ add 3 to both sides）と言うのが話し言葉でも書き言葉でも最も多く、教室では「反対側へ動かす」（move it over to the other side）も使われる。
場面で変わる言い方
- from both sides
- 話し言葉・書き言葉 subtract 3 from both sides の形で。話し言葉で最も多い。Khan Academy（中学の講義と高校向け）と YouTube の解説が中心で、大学の講義（MIT OCW）には少ない。書き言葉では to both sides と同じくらい。
- to both sides
- 話し言葉・書き言葉 add 3 to both sides の形で。話し言葉では from both sides と同じくらい多く、Khan Academy と YouTube の解説が中心で、MIT OCW には少ない。書き言葉でも from both sides と同じくらい。
- to the other side
- 話し言葉・書き言葉 move the 3x over to the other side ／ bring it over to the other side の形で。話し言葉では両辺の言い方より少ない。大学の講義に寄る（MIT OCW が最も多く、Khan Academy では少ない）。書き言葉には少ない。
- isolate x
- 書き言葉・答案 x だけを片側に残す（isolate the variable）言い方。書き言葉のほうが多く（大半が OpenStax Prealgebra）、話し言葉にはほとんど出てこない。
定義
等式や不等式の項を、符号を変えて反対側へ移すこと。
To move a term to the other side of an equation or inequality, changing its sign.
例文
話し言葉 Move the 3x over to the other side so the x's are together. 3x を移項して x をまとめて。
書き言葉・答案 Subtract 5 from both sides: 2x = 8. 5 を移項して 2x = 8
話し言葉 When you move a term to the other side, flip its sign: plus 5 becomes minus 5. 移項するときは符号を変える。+5 は −5 になる。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 中学・高校レベルの説明では「両辺から引く／両辺に足す」（from both sides ／ to both sides）が多い（Khan Academy と YouTube の解説が中心）。大学の講義（MIT OCW）では move … over to the other side のほうが from both sides よりずっと多い。答案に書くなら両辺の言い方。
- 移項を名詞 transposition で言う例は用例コーパスにない。動詞句で言う。
