定義

調査の対象となる集団全体。標本調査では、その一部を標本として取り出す。

The whole group being studied; in a sample survey, a sample is taken from it.

話し言葉 The population is all the students at the school, and the sample is the 50 we actually asked. 母集団は学校の生徒全員で、標本は実際に聞いた 50 人。

書き言葉・答案 Identify the population and the sample in the study. この調査の母集団と標本を答えよ。

population は「人口」「（生物の）個体数」の意味でもよく使う（population growth は人口・個体数の増加）。用例コーパスでも、この意味で使っている文脈がかなりあった。
母集団の特徴を表す数（母平均など）を parameter、標本から計算する数を statistic と呼び分ける。

米国の講義の書き起こし・字幕（話し言葉）と教科書・講義ノート（書き言葉）で、言い方ごとに数えた回数です。語形変化はまとめ、「…」は 1〜3 語の空き。「数えていない」はその側では数えていないことを示します。
