データの範囲の内側にある、観測していない値を、モデルなどを使って推定すること。

言い間違えやすいところ
- interpolation は、線形代数や数値計算では、与えられた点をすべて通る関数（多項式）を作ることも指す（Nicholson 3.2 の Polynomial Interpolation、6.5 の Lagrange interpolation expansion）。日本語版 Wikipedia「内挿」も、データ列の区間の内側を埋める値や関数を求めることとし、最小二乗近似とは別のものとする。
