定義
散布図の点の近くを通るように、最小二乗法で決めた直線 ŷ = a + bx。一方の変量から他方を予測するのに使う。
The line ŷ = a + bx fitted to a scatter plot by least squares, used to predict one variable from the other.
例文
話し言葉 The regression line predicts about 72 for someone who studied 5 hours. 回帰直線によると、5 時間勉強した人は約 72 点と予測される。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 書き言葉では regression line・line of best fit・regression equation・least-squares line・best-fit line が並ぶ。話し言葉は regression line（すべて Khan Academy）。最小二乗法で決めたことを示すときは least-squares regression line。
- ŷ は y hat と読む。OpenStax Introductory Statistics（12.3）は回帰直線を ŷ = a + bx と書き（16 件）、AP Statistics の CED（topic 5.5）も傾きを b、y 切片を a とする。中学校学習指導要領解説（第 2 学年 一次関数）の y = ax + b とは a と b の役割が逆になる。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry（4.3）の練習問題は、電卓の出力に合わせて y = ax + b（a が傾き）と書く。
- 回帰直線で求めた値を予測値（predicted value）と言い、ŷ と書く。predicted value は書き言葉では大半が OpenStax Introductory Statistics。回帰直線を使ってデータの範囲外を予測するのは外挿（extrapolation）。
- IM Algebra 1（3.4〜3.10）と IM 6–8 Math（Grade 8 の 6.6）は line of best fit だけを使う（regression line は IM で 0 件）。
