定義
実際に観測した値と、回帰直線で予測した値との差（実際の y − 予測した ŷ）。点が回帰直線より上にあれば正、下にあれば負になる。
The difference between an observed value and the value predicted by the regression line: observed minus predicted. It is positive when the point lies above the line and negative when it lies below.
例文
話し言葉 This point is above the line, so its residual is positive. この点は直線より上にあるから、残差は正だね。
書き言葉・答案 The regression line predicts ŷ = 52 when x = 6, but the observed value is 49. Find the residual. x = 6 のとき回帰直線による予測値は ŷ = 52 だが、実際の値は 49 である。残差を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 引く順番は「実際 − 予測」（observed − predicted）。逆にすると符号が反対になる。上の例では 49 − 52 = −3。
- ŷ は y hat と読む。
- 残差を点で表した図は residual plot（エントリ residual-plot）。複素関数論の留数（residue）は別の語。
