研究者が処理を割り当てず、対象のありのままの様子を観察・記録して調べる研究。標本調査もその一種。
A study in which researchers observe and record what happens without assigning any treatment to the individuals.
例文
話し言葉 Nobody told people whether to drink coffee, so this is an observational study, and we can't say the coffee caused anything. コーヒーを飲むかどうかを誰も指示していないから、これは観察研究で、コーヒーが原因だとは言えない。
書き言葉・答案 Researchers recorded the daily screen time and hours of sleep for a group of students. Explain why this is an observational study rather than an experiment. 研究者は、ある生徒の集団について 1 日のスクリーンタイムと睡眠時間を記録した。これが実験ではなく観察研究である理由を説明せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 観察研究からは因果関係（cause-and-effect）は言えない。2 つの変数に関係が見えても、交絡変数（エントリ confounding-variable）のせいかもしれない。AP Statistics の CED は実験（エントリ experiment）とこの点で区別する。
- 実験との違いは、研究者が処理を割り当てるかどうか。標本調査（エントリ sample-survey）も処理を割り当てないので observational study の一種になる。
