研究者が被験者（実験の単位）に処理を割り当てて、その効果を調べる研究。処理を無作為に割り当てれば、因果関係を示せる。
A study in which researchers assign treatments to the experimental units and measure the effect. When the treatments are assigned at random, an experiment can show cause and effect.
例文

言い間違えやすいところ
- 確率の「試行」（コインを投げるなど、エントリ trial）も英語で experiment と呼ぶことがある。統計の研究としての「実験」か、確率の「試行」かを場面で区別する。
- 実験と観察研究（エントリ observational-study）の違いは、処理を割り当てるかどうか。因果関係を言えるのは、処理を無作為に割り当てた（random assignment、エントリ randomization）実験。
