日本語の「試行」は、標本空間や事象を考える実験そのもの（学習指導要領解説（数学B）の「2枚の硬貨を投げる試行についての標本空間」、センター試験 平成 30 年度 数学I・数学A 第 3 問の「大小 2 個のさいころを同時に投げる試行」）にも、その 1 回 1 回（共通テスト 令和 6 年度 数学I・数学A 第 3 問の「n 回の試行で」「n 回目の試行で初めて」）にも使う。日本語版 Wikipedia「試行 (確率論)」も英名に trial と experiment を並べる。AP Statistics の CED（topic 2.3）は outcome を one trial of a random process の結果と書き、IM（Grade 7 8.6・8.7）・OpenStax Introductory Statistics も trial を 1 回 1 回に使う。実験そのものは、CED は random process、IM（Grade 7）は chance experiment、OpenStax Introductory Statistics は experiment と呼ぶ。
定義
同じ条件のもとで繰り返すことができ、結果が偶然によって決まる実験や観測。繰り返すときの 1 回 1 回も試行と呼ぶ。

例文
話し言葉 Each flip of the coin is one trial, so ten flips means ten trials. 硬貨を 1 回投げるのが 1 回の試行だから、10 回投げれば 10 回の試行だ。
書き言葉・答案 A trial consists of rolling two dice and recording the sum of the numbers shown. 2 個のさいころを投げ、出た目の和を記録することを 1 回の試行とする。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 用例コーパスの書き言葉は大半が OpenStax Introductory Statistics。
- 「試行錯誤」は trial and error で、確率の試行とは別の言い方。
