日本語は硬貨もさいころも「投げる」と言うが、英語では硬貨は toss ／ flip（toss a coin、flip a coin）、さいころは roll（roll a die）と言い分ける。IM は flip a coin の言い方が多く、OpenStax は toss a coin が多い。
場面で変わる言い方
- flip
- 話し言葉・書き言葉 コインを投げるときの言い方。話し言葉では toss より多い（Khan Academy の中学の講義に多い）。IM もこの言い方。
- roll
- 話し言葉・書き言葉 さいころを投げるときの言い方（roll a die）。話・書とも使う。
定義
確率の試行で、硬貨やさいころを投げて、どの面が出るかを見る。
To throw a coin into the air so that it lands heads or tails. For a die, the verb is roll.
例文
話し言葉 Toss the coin first, then roll the die. How many outcomes are there in all? まず硬貨を投げて、次にさいころを投げる。結果は全部で何通りある？
書き言葉・答案 A coin is tossed and a die is rolled. Find the probability of getting heads and an even number. 1 枚の硬貨と 1 個のさいころを投げる。硬貨は表が出て、さいころは偶数の目が出る確率を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「投げる」を throw と直訳しない。硬貨は toss ／ flip（toss a coin、flip a coin）、さいころは roll（roll a die、roll two dice。エントリ die）。
- toss は名詞でも使い、a coin toss は硬貨を 1 回投げること。「表が出る」は land heads up ／ come up heads（エントリ coin）。
