日本語の「さいころ」は 1 個でも 2 個でも同じ形だが、英語の die は 1 個のさいころで、複数形は dice（2 個なら two dice）。英語版 Wikipedia「Dice」は、dice を 1 個にも使うことがあると書く。IM（Grade 6〜8 で 28 件・9〜12 で 47 件）と OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry・Precalculus（各 10 件）は、1〜6 の目がある立方体のさいころを number cube とも言う。
定義
立方体の 6 つの面に 1 から 6 までの目が 1 つずつついた道具。公正なさいころでは、どの目が出ることも同様に確からしい。
A small cube whose six faces show the numbers 1 through 6, rolled to get a random result; the plural is dice. On a fair die, each number is equally likely to come up.
例文
話し言葉 One die gives you 6 outcomes, but two dice give you 6 times 6, or 36. さいころ 1 個なら結果は 6 通りだけど、2 個なら 6 × 6 で 36 通り。
書き言葉・答案 A fair die is rolled once. Find the probability of rolling a number greater than 4. 1 個のさいころを 1 回投げる。4 より大きい目が出る確率を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- die は動詞「死ぬ」と同じ綴りの語。さいころの die は数えられる名詞で、a die ／ the die のように冠詞が付く。
- 「さいころを投げる」は roll a die（エントリ toss）。目は number で言い、「3 の目が出る」は roll a 3、「偶数の目が出る」は roll an even number。
