3 本以上の線分で囲まれた平面図形。三角形・四角形・五角形などをまとめて多角形という。
A closed flat figure made of three or more straight sides that meet only at their endpoints. Triangles, quadrilaterals, and pentagons are all polygons.
例文
話し言葉 A circle isn't a polygon — a polygon has to be made of straight sides, and a circle doesn't have any. 円は多角形じゃないよ。多角形はまっすぐな辺でできていないといけないけど、円にはまっすぐな辺がないからね。
書き言葉・答案 Find the sum of the interior angles of a polygon with 9 sides. 九角形の内角の和を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- n 角形は英語で n-gon と言う（9-gon は nine-gon と読む）。五角形 pentagon、六角形 hexagon、八角形 octagon のように決まった名前をもつものもある。
- polygon は平面図形。立体の多面体は polyhedron（エントリ polyhedron）で、poly-（多い）が共通なので取り違えない。
- 辺はすべて線分なので、円や、曲線の辺をもつおうぎ形（エントリ sector）は polygon ではない。
