日本語の「式で表す」は、等号を含まない式も、等式（方程式）や不等式も指す（中学校学習指導要領解説の第 1 学年 A(2) は、入館料の合計を a + 2b と表すことと、数量の相等関係・大小関係を等式・不等式に表すことを、同じ文字を用いた式の項目で扱う）が、英語は write an expression ／ write an equation ／ write an inequality と言い分ける（IM Algebra 1 2.2 の練習問題の指示は Write an expression, an equation, or an inequality）。

定義
言葉で述べられた数量や数量の関係を、文字と数を使った式に書き表す。等号で結べば等式（方程式）、等号も不等号も含まなければ式になる。

話し言葉 Let's write an equation for this one: if the number is x, then 2x plus 7 equals 25. これを式で表してみよう。ある数を x とすると、2x + 7 = 25 だね。
書き言葉・答案 Write an equation for the following and solve it: when 8 is added to a number, the result is three times the number. ある数に 8 を加えると、もとの数の 3 倍になる。このことを方程式で表し、ある数を求めよ。
書き言葉・答案 Write an expression for the total cost, in dollars, of x pens at 2 dollars each and one notebook at 5 dollars. 1 本 2 ドルのペン x 本と、5 ドルのノート 1 冊の代金の合計（ドル）を表す式を書け。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 等号を含むなら equation、含まないなら expression（エントリ expression）。「代金を表す式を書け」は write an expression、「方程式で表せ」は write an equation。不等号で結ぶ不等式は write an inequality（IM Algebra 1 2.2）。
- 文章題で方程式をつくる「式を立てる」は write an equation ／ set up an equation。
- グラフや条件から直線・円などの式を決める「式を求める」は別のエントリ（find-the-equation）。
