定義
2 つの立体を底面に平行な平面で切ったとき、どの高さでも断面積が等しければ、2 つの立体の体積は等しいという原理。
If two solids have the same height and every plane parallel to their bases cuts them in cross sections of equal area, then the two solids have the same volume.
例文
話し言葉 Think of a stack of coins. If you push it so it leans, every coin still has the same area, so by Cavalieri's principle the volume doesn't change. コインを積んだ山を思い浮かべよう。押して斜めにしても、どのコインの面積も変わらない。だからカヴァリエリの原理で体積は変わらない。
書き言葉・答案 A right cylinder and an oblique cylinder both have radius 3 and height 10. Use Cavalieri's principle to explain why they have the same volume. 半径 3、高さ 10 の直円柱と斜円柱がある。カヴァリエリの原理を用いて、2 つの体積が等しい理由を説明せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 英語では人名の所有格で Cavalieri's principle と書き、C は大文字。
- 断面積を積分して体積を求める方法と同じ考え方で、断面積が等しければ積分の値（体積）も等しくなる。
- IM Geometry は glossary に入れ、5.10 Cross Sections and Volume ほかで 4 件使う。用例コーパスにはほとんど出てこない。
