立体を平面で切ったときにできる切り口の図形。微積分では、断面の面積を積分して立体の体積を求める。
The two-dimensional shape you get when a plane slices through a solid. In calculus, the areas of cross sections are integrated to find a volume.
例文
話し言葉 If you slice the cylinder parallel to its base, the cross section is a circle, but if you slice it straight down through the middle, you get a rectangle. 円柱を底面に平行に切ると断面は円になるけど、まん中を縦にまっすぐ切ると長方形になる。
書き言葉・答案 A solid sits on the region under y = √x for 0 ≤ x ≤ 4, and each cross section taken perpendicular to the x-axis is a square. Find its volume. ある立体の底面は、x = 0 から x = 4 までの曲線 y = √x の下の部分である。x 軸に垂直な平面で切った断面はどれも正方形である。この立体の体積を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「断面」「切り口」はどちらも cross section。断面の面積（断面積）は cross-sectional area と形容詞の形になる。ハイフン付きの cross-section と書くこともある。
- AP Calculus の CED では topic 8.7・8.8（Volumes with Cross Sections）に出て、問題文は x 軸に垂直な断面の形（正方形、半円など）を指定する。IM では Grade 7 の 7.11 Slicing Solids から出てくる。
- 用例コーパスで cross section（ハイフン付きを含む）は、話し言葉では Khan Academy と Professor Leonard が大半、書き言葉では OpenStax Calculus が半分以上。
