用例コーパスと参照（CED・OpenStax・IM・CK-12）には決まった言い方が出てこない。「伴って変わる」は中学校学習指導要領解説が関数を導入する言い方（「伴って変わる二つの数量」）で、英語では y changes as x changes、y depends on x、as x increases, y increases のように、文で言い表す。

2 つの量のうち、一方の値が変わると、それにつれてもう一方の値も変わること。中 1 で関数を学ぶときの出発点になる言い方。
Describes two quantities where a change in the value of one goes along with a change in the value of the other. It is the starting idea for functions.
例文
話し言葉 Time and distance change together: the longer you walk, the farther you go. 時間と道のりはともなって変わる。長く歩くほど、遠くまで進む。
書き言葉・答案 The side length x cm and the perimeter y cm of a square change together. Express y in terms of x. 正方形の 1 辺の長さ x cm と周の長さ y cm は、ともなって変わる。y を x の式で表せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「伴って」を accompany と直訳しない。英語では as を使って y changes as x changes と言う。
- ともなって変わる 2 つの量が、いつも関数の関係になるとは限らない。x の値を決めると y の値がただ 1 つ決まるときに、y is a function of x（y は x の関数）と言う（エントリ function）。
