中学校学習指導要領解説は、式の中の x や a を「文字」と呼ぶ（「文字を用いた式」）。英語では letter ではなく variable と言う（x is a variable）ので、「文字」も「変数」も英語では variable になる。

定義

いろいろな値をとることができる文字。式の中で、数の代わりに使う x や y など。

A letter, such as x or y, that stands for a number that can change or that we don't know yet.

話し言葉 We don't know the number yet, so let's call it x. That x is our variable. その数はまだわからないから x とおこう。この x が変数（文字）だ。

書き言葉・答案 Define a variable for the unknown number, then write and solve an equation. 求める数を文字で表して方程式をつくり、それを解け。

式の中の「文字」は英語では variable と言う。「文字を使った式」は an expression with variables、「x について解く」は solve for x（エントリ solve-for）。
英語の variable は、統計の「変量」も指す（エントリ statistical-variable）。式の中の変数か、データの項目（身長・点数など）かは文脈で読み分ける。
