定義

値が変わらない、決まった数。a や k のような文字でも、1 つの決まった値を表すものは定数という。

A quantity whose value does not change, such as 5 or −2. A letter like k is also a constant when it stands for one fixed number.

例文

話し言葉 In y = kx, k is a constant; it stays the same while x and y change. y = kx の k は定数。x と y が変わっても、k は変わらない。

書き言葉・答案 In y = ax + 3, a is a constant. If the graph passes through the point (2, 11), find the value of a. y = ax + 3 のグラフが点 (2, 11) を通るとき、定数 a の値を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

比例定数は constant of proportionality、積分定数は constant of integration（エントリ constant-of-integration）。どちらも constant を使う。
英語の constant は形容詞にもなり、「一定の」の意味で使う（a constant rate = 一定の割合、constant speed = 一定の速さ）。
