文字を含む項で、文字にかけられている数の部分。3x の係数は 3、−x の係数は −1。

The number that multiplies the variable in a term. In 3x the coefficient is 3, and in −x it is −1.

話し言葉 In 7 − 4x, the coefficient of x is negative 4, so keep the sign with it. 7 − 4x で、x の係数は −4。符号も一緒に考えてね。

書き言葉・答案 State the coefficient of x in the expression 5x² − x + 8. 式 5x² − x + 8 における x の係数を答えよ。

x の係数は 1、−x の係数は −1。1 は書かないが、係数は 1 として扱う。
相関係数（correlation coefficient）や二項係数（binomial coefficient）は別の語（エントリ correlation-coefficient、binomial-coefficient）。
発音は「コウエフィシェント」に近く、fi にアクセントを置く（Merriam-Webster: ˌkō-ə-ˈfi-shənt）。
