定義

2 つの数量 x, y があり、x の値を決めると y の値がただ 1 つに決まるとき、y は x の関数であるという。

A rule that gives exactly one output for each input. If each value of x gives exactly one value of y, then y is a function of x.

例文

話し言葉 For each x you get exactly one y, so y is a function of x. x を 1 つ決めると y が 1 つに決まるから、y は x の関数だね。

書き言葉・答案 A notebook costs 2 dollars. The total cost y of x notebooks is a function of x. Write an equation for y in terms of x. 1 冊 2 ドルのノートを x 冊買うときの代金を y ドルとすると、y は x の関数である。y を x の式で表せ。

言い間違えやすいところ

「函数」は古い書き方で、意味は同じ。
「y は x の関数」は y is a function of x と of を使う。f(x) は function notation（エントリ function-notation）で、f of x と読む。「f かける x」ではない。
function は「機能・働き」の意味でも使う。数学の function は「関数」。
