関数に f などの名前を付け、x に対応する値を f(x) と書き表す書き方。
The way of naming a function, such as f, and writing its output for the input x as f(x).
例文
話し言葉 In function notation, instead of y = 3x + 2 we write f(x) = 3x + 2. 関数記号を使うと、y = 3x + 2 の代わりに f(x) = 3x + 2 と書く。
書き言葉・答案 Rewrite the equation y = x² − 5 using function notation, and then find f(3). y = x² − 5 を関数記号を用いて書き直し、f(3) を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- f(x) は「f かける x」ではない。括弧は掛け算ではなく、f に x を入れた値を表す。
- 英語版 Wikipedia の Function symbol（日本語版「関数記号」の対応記事）は数理論理学の用語。f(x) という書き方そのものは function notation と言う。
