「変域」1 語に当たる語は用例コーパスと参照に出てこない。x の変域は domain（定義域）、y の変域は range（値域）と、x と y で言い分ける。見出しの domain and range は、2 つをまとめて言うときの形。
定義
関数で、変数がとる値の範囲。x の変域を定義域、y の変域を値域という。
The sets of values that the variables of a function can take. The possible x-values form the domain, and the resulting y-values form the range.
例文
話し言葉 Let's find the domain and range: this graph runs from x = 1 to x = 4, and from y = 2 to y = 8. 変域を求めよう。このグラフは x = 1 から x = 4 まで、y = 2 から y = 8 までだね。
書き言葉・答案 For y = 2x, the values of x go from −1 to 3. Write the domain and range as inequalities. y = 2x で、x の値は −1 から 3 までとする。x の変域と y の変域を不等式で表せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本の −1 ≦ x ≦ 3（共通テスト・センター試験の問題文も ≦ を使う）は、英語では ≤ を使って −1 ≤ x ≤ 3 と書く。区間記法 [−1, 3] で書くこともある（エントリ interval）。
- range は統計では「範囲」（最大値 − 最小値）の意味でも使う。関数の値域とは別の意味。
- domain を「領域」と訳さない。不等式が表す平面の「領域」は region と言う。
