式と読み方

\sin^2\frac{\alpha}{2} = \frac{1 - \cos\alpha}{2}

sine squared of alpha over two equals one minus cosine alpha over two

定義

sin(α/2)、cos(α/2)、tan(α/2) を cos α で表す公式（2 乗の形 sin²(α/2) = (1 − cos α)/2 でも使う）。2 倍角の公式から得られる。

The formulas expressing sin(α/2), cos(α/2), and tan(α/2) in terms of cos α, such as sin(α/2) = ±√((1 − cos α)/2) or, squared, sin²(α/2) = (1 − cos α)/2; they come from the double-angle formulas.

例文

話し言葉 To get sin 22.5 degrees, use the half-angle formula with 45 degrees. sin 22.5° は、45° で半角の公式を使えば出る。

書き言葉・答案 Find the exact value of cos(π/8) with a half-angle formula. 半角の公式を用いて cos(π/8) の値を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は half-angle formulas を sin(α/2) = ±√((1 − cos α)/2) と平方根の形で書き（± は α/2 の象限で決める）、2 乗の形 sin²θ = (1 − cos 2θ)/2 は reduction formulas（power-reducing formulas）として別に挙げる。日本語版 Wikipedia「三角関数の公式の一覧」も半角の公式を平方根の形で載せる。講義では、積分で次数を下げる 2 乗の形も half angle formula と呼ぶ。
