Euclid's theorem
名詞 別の言い方 infinitude of primes, infinitely many primes
N equals p sub 1 times p sub 2 times dot dot dot times p sub n, plus 1
The theorem that there are infinitely many prime numbers. The classic proof assumes there are only finitely many, multiplies them all together, adds 1, and reaches a contradiction.
Euclid's theorem says the primes never run out, and its proof is a classic example of proof by contradiction.
Prove Euclid's theorem: there are infinitely many primes.
2 × 3 × 5 × 7 × 11 × 13 + 1 = 30031 = 59 × 509。
- 「素数は無限にある」を infinite primes とすると「無限大の素数」と読めるので、there are infinitely many primes と言う。
