定義

数を掛け合わせる計算（かけ算）。結果を積という。

The operation of multiplying numbers together; the answer is called the product.

例文

話し言葉 Do the multiplication first: 2 plus 3 times 4 is 2 plus 12, so it's 14, not 20. かけ算を先にやろう。2 + 3 × 4 は 2 + 12 で 14。20 じゃないよ。

書き言葉・答案 Decide the sign of the product before doing the multiplication, and then find the value of (−4) × (−6) × (−1). (−4) × (−6) × (−1) について、乗法を計算する前に積の符号を決め、その値を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

× は times と読む（3 times 4）。演算の名前は multiplication、動詞は multiply（エントリ multiply）、答えの「積」は product。
乗法の記号は × のほかに中黒 ·（3 · 4）も使い、文字式では記号を省いて 2x、ab と書く。
