0 より小さい数。−3 のように数の前に − を付けて表し、数直線では 0 より左にある。

A number less than zero. It is written with a − sign in front, like −3, and is to the left of zero on a number line.

例文

話し言葉 If you owe your friend 10 dollars, you can show that with a negative number: negative 10. 友だちに 10 ドル借りているなら、負の数で −10 と表せる。

書き言葉・答案 The temperature was 4°F at noon and dropped 9 degrees by midnight. Write the midnight temperature as a negative number. 正午の気温は 4°F で、真夜中までに 9 度下がった。真夜中の気温を負の数で表せ。

言い間違えやすいところ

−3 は negative three と読む。minus は引き算の読み（5 − 3 は five minus three）。英語版 Wikipedia「Negative number」は −3 の読みに minus three も挙げる。
0 は負の数ではない。「負でない数」（0 以上の数）は nonnegative number で、0 を含む。
