定義

数が正であるか負であるかを表す + と − のこと。−7 の符号は −、+7 の符号は + である。

Whether a number is positive or negative, shown by a + or − in front of it. For example, the sign of −7 is negative.

例文

話し言葉 When two numbers have the same sign, add them and keep that sign. 2 つの数が同符号なら、足してその符号をそのまま付ければいい。
書き言葉・答案 Without multiplying, determine the sign of the product (−2)(−5)(−1). 計算しないで、積 (−2)(−5)(−1) の符号を答えよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

  • 「同符号」は same sign、「異符号」は opposite signs または different signs。
  • minus sign（− の記号）や radical sign（根号 √）の sign は記号そのものの名前で、数が正か負かを表す「符号」とは使い方が違う。
  • 0 は正の数でも負の数でもないので、0 の符号は + でも − でもない。
