定義

直線上に基準の点 0 と単位の長さを決め、各点に 1 つの実数を対応させたもの。右へ行くほど数が大きくなる。

A straight line on which every point stands for a real number, measured from a point marked 0 with a fixed unit length; numbers increase to the right.

例文

話し言葉 Let's put −3 on the number line: start at zero and go three units to the left. −3 を数直線上にとってみよう。0 から左へ 3 目盛り進む。

書き言葉・答案 Graph the solution set of x ≥ −2 on a number line. x ≧ −2 の解を数直線上に図示せよ。

言い間違えやすいところ

不等式の解を数直線に表すとき、端点を含むなら塗りつぶした丸（closed circle）、含まないなら白丸（open circle）で表す（IM・OpenStax）。
絶対値 |a| は、数直線上で原点から a までの距離として説明する（the distance from 0 on the number line）。
「数直線上に」は on the number line（書き言葉によく出てくる）。見出しの number line を中に含むので、候補表現には数えない。
