定義
座標をもとに、座標平面上のその位置に点をかき入れること。原点から x 座標の分だけ左右に、y 座標の分だけ上下に進んだところに点を打つ。
To mark a point at its location on the coordinate plane, using its coordinates. Start at the origin, move left or right by the x-coordinate, then up or down by the y-coordinate.
例文
話し言葉 Let's plot a point at (3, −2): start at the origin, go right 3, then down 2. (3, −2) に点をとろう。原点から右に 3、下に 2 進んだところだよ。
書き言葉・答案 Plot a point at (−4, 1) and label it A. 点 A(−4, 1) を座標平面上にとれ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 「点をとる」の「とる」を take と訳さない。take a point は「（条件を満たす）点を 1 つ選んで考える」（take a point P on the circle）の意味で、座標平面に点を打つことではない。
- plot は名詞で統計の図の名前にもなる（scatter plot ／ box plot。エントリ scatter-plot、box-plot）。
