定義
原点で垂直に交わる x 軸と y 軸を定めて、点の位置を 2 つの数の組 (x, y) で表せるようにした平面。
A flat surface with a horizontal x-axis and a vertical y-axis that cross at the origin, so that every point can be named by an ordered pair (x, y).
例文
話し言葉 Plot (2, 5) on the coordinate plane: start at the origin, go right 2, then up 5. (2, 5) を座標平面にとってみよう。原点から右に 2、それから上に 5。
書き言葉・答案 Plot the points A(−3, 1) and B(4, −2) on the coordinate plane, and name the quadrant that each point lies in. 座標平面上に点 A(−3, 1)、B(4, −2) をとり、それぞれの点がどの象限にあるかを答えよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 点の座標 (x, y) は ordered pair（順序対）とも呼ぶ。順番に意味があり、(2, 5) と (5, 2) は別の点。
- plane（平面）は、発音が同じ plain（平らな・飾りのない。Merriam-Webster はどちらも ˈplān）と綴りを取り違えやすい。
