日本語の「交点」は交わる点で、接する点も含めて言うときは「共有点」と言う（高等学校学習指導要領解説（数学I）は二次方程式の解をグラフと x 軸との共有点の x 座標と捉え、共通テスト（令和 3 年度 第 1 日程 数学II 第 3 問）は「2 点で交わる」「接する」「共有点をもたない」を分けて言う）。英語の point of intersection は intersect（エントリ intersect）する点で、接する場合の点も含む（IM Geometry の用語集（7.3 Tangent Lines）は接線を円と exactly one point で intersect する直線と定義し、OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry 11.3 も接線は円と intersects … at exactly one point と書き、放物線と直線の Points of Intersection の場合の 1 つに直線が放物線に接する場合を挙げる）。接する点だとはっきり言うときは point of tangency（エントリ point-of-tangency）か、the graph touches the x-axis と言う。
場面で変わる言い方
- point of intersection
- 話し言葉・書き言葉 話し言葉・書き言葉とも intersection point より多い。話し言葉は Khan Academy が半分ほど、書き言葉は OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry が半分ほど。
- intersection point
- 書き言葉・答案 話し言葉・書き言葉とも point of intersection より少ない。話し言葉は 3Blue1Brown が半分以上、書き言葉は大半が OpenStax Calculus。
定義
2 つの線（直線・曲線）が交わる点。交点の座標は 2 つの方程式を連立して求める。
The point where two lines or curves meet; its coordinates come from solving the two equations together.
例文
話し言葉 Set the two equations equal to each other to find the point of intersection. 2 つの式を等しいとおいて交点を求める。
書き言葉・答案 Find the coordinates of the points of intersection of the line y = x + 1 and the circle x² + y² = 5. 直線 y = x + 1 と円 x² + y² = 5 の交点の座標を求めよ。
書き言葉・答案 How many points of intersection does the graph of y = x² − 4x + k have with the x-axis? y = x² − 4x + k のグラフと x 軸の共有点の個数を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 複数の交点は points of intersection（intersection points）。
- 接することをはっきり言うときは、the graph touches the x-axis（x 軸に接する）や point of tangency（エントリ point-of-tangency）と言う。
