英語の intersect は共有点をもつことで、接する場合も含む: IM Geometry と CK-12 Geometry は接線を円と exactly one point で intersect する直線と定義し、OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry も接線が放物線と intersects … at exactly one point と書く。共通テストの問題文は「2 点で交わる」「接する」「共有点をもたない」を分けて言う（令和 3 年度 第 1 日程 数学II）。日本語の「交わる」だけを言うなら intersect at two points、「接する」は is tangent to。
定義
2 つの図形（直線・曲線）が共有点をもつ。英語では、接する場合（共有点が 1 つ）も含めて言う。
Of two lines or curves: to have at least one point in common.
例文
話し言葉 These two lines intersect at (1, 3), so that's our solution. この 2 直線は (1, 3) で交わるので、それが答え。
書き言葉・答案 Find the values of k for which the line y = x + k intersects the parabola y = x² at two points. 直線 y = x + k が放物線 y = x² と 2 点で交わるような k の値の範囲を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 「共有点をもつ」も intersect で言える（接する場合も intersect に含まれる。mapping_note）。「接する」とはっきり言うなら is tangent to。
- cross（the line crosses the x-axis）や meet も話し言葉・書き言葉とも使う。
