直角に交わる 2 直線で、一方を他方の垂線ともいう。座標平面では傾きの積が −1 になる（座標軸に平行な場合を除く）。

言い間違えやすいところ
- OpenStax（Elementary Algebra・Intermediate Algebra・Algebra and Trigonometry）は傾きの条件を negative reciprocals（負の逆数）と言う。日本の「傾きの積が −1」と同じ内容。
- 「垂線」に当たる 1 語の名詞はなく、a line perpendicular to ℓ や the perpendicular from P to ℓ と言う。垂線の足は foot of the perpendicular（エントリ foot-of-the-perpendicular）。
