定義
ある数に掛けると積が 1 になる数。0 でない数 a の逆数は 1/a で、0 には逆数がない。
The number you multiply a given number by to get 1; the reciprocal of a nonzero number a is 1/a. Zero has no reciprocal.
例文
話し言葉 The reciprocal of negative 2/3 is negative 3/2: you flip the fraction, but the sign stays the same. −2/3 の逆数は −3/2。分数はひっくり返すけど、符号はそのまま。
書き言葉・答案 Find the reciprocal of each number: −6, 2/5, 0.25. 次の数の逆数を求めよ。−6、2/5、0.25
言い間違えやすいところ
- 逆数（reciprocal）と、符号を変えた数（opposite、反数）を取り違えない。−2/3 の reciprocal は −3/2、opposite は 2/3（エントリ opposite）。
- 0 には逆数がない（0 has no reciprocal）。0 に何を掛けても 1 にならないため。
- multiplicative inverse は reciprocal と同じ意味。inverse だけだと逆関数（inverse function）や命題の裏（エントリ inverse）など別の意味になる。
