平方単位
へいほうたんい 近いが同じではないsquare units

見出しの「平方単位」は学習指導要領解説に無い、本プロジェクトの訳語。日本では cm²・m² のように決まった単位で答える。英語の問題では単位を決めずに、1 辺 1 の正方形いくつ分かを square units ／ units squared で答えさせることがある。

定義
1 辺の長さが 1 単位の正方形を 1 つと数えて面積を表すときの単位。長さの単位が決まっていない問題で、面積を「いくつ分」で答えるのに使う。
The unit used to measure area by counting squares whose sides are 1 unit long. It is used to give an area when no specific unit of length, such as inches, is stated.
例文
話し言葉 Each little box on the grid is one square unit, so just count them: this shape covers 12 square units. 方眼の小さなマス 1 つが 1 平方単位だから、数えればいい。この図形の面積は 12 平方単位だ。
話し言葉 The base is 6 and the height is 4, so the area of the rectangle is 24 units squared. 底辺が 6、高さが 4 だから、長方形の面積は 24 平方単位だ。
書き言葉・答案 Find the area of the triangle with vertices (0, 0), (6, 0), and (0, 4). Give your answer in square units. 3 点 (0, 0), (6, 0), (0, 4) を頂点とする三角形の面積を求めよ（単位は平方単位）。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 24 square units と 24 units squared は同じ意味。用例コーパスでは話し言葉・書き言葉とも square units のほうが多いが、units squared も使われる。
- 日本の問題では面積を cm² や m² で答え、「平方単位」とは言わない。記号では units² と書く。
- IM は square units を 253 件（Grade 6 1.8 Area of Triangles 16 ほか）、units squared を 28 件使う。CK-12 Geometry は square units を 13 件使う。
