平面図形や曲面が占める広さを、単位の正方形がいくつ分かで表した量。
The amount of surface a region or figure covers, measured by how many unit squares it takes to cover it.
例文
話し言葉 The area of a triangle is one half base times height, so here it's one half times 6 times 4, which is 12 square centimeters. 三角形の面積は底辺 × 高さ ÷ 2 だから、ここでは 6 × 4 ÷ 2 で 12 cm² だね。
書き言葉・答案 A triangle has two sides of length 5 and 8 with an included angle of 30°. Find its area. 2 辺の長さが 5 と 8 で、その間の角が 30° である三角形の面積を求めよ。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 面積の単位 cm² は square centimeters と読む（centimeters squared とも言う）。答えに単位を付けるときは square units。
- 立体の表面の広さ（表面積）は surface area で、area だけとは言い分ける。
- 統計では、正規分布などの曲線の下の面積が確率を表す（the area under the curve）。
