- 書き言葉・答案 書き言葉（ほぼ OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry）の言い方。話し言葉にはほとんど出てこない。
定義
図形が、ある直線（または点）に関して折り返し（または 180° 回転し）ても重なる状態。2 点についても言う。
Describing a figure (or a pair of points) that maps onto itself (onto each other) under a reflection across a line or a half-turn about a point.
例文
話し言葉 The graph of an even function is symmetric about the y-axis. 偶関数のグラフは y 軸に関して対称。
書き言葉・答案 Show that the points A and B are symmetric with respect to the line y = x. 2 点 A, B が直線 y = x に関して対称であることを示せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- symmetric は symmetric matrix（対称行列）にも使う。書き言葉では symmetric with respect to もよく使う。
- 「点対称」は symmetric about the origin（原点に関して）や symmetric about a point。
