「逆算する」に当たる 1 語の英語はない。1 つの操作を打ち消すのは undo（undo the addition by subtracting 3）、操作を最後から順にさかのぼるのは work backwards と言う。打ち消すための演算は inverse operations（逆演算）で、足し算には引き算、掛け算には割り算を使う（use inverse operations）。
定義
行った計算を、最後の操作から順に逆にたどって、もとの数を求めること。足し算は引き算で、掛け算は割り算で打ち消す。
To undo an operation with its inverse operation, such as subtracting 3 to undo adding 3. Working backwards means undoing the steps in reverse order, starting with the last one.
例文
話し言葉 It's x plus 3 equals 10, so undo the plus 3 by subtracting 3 from both sides. x + 3 = 10 だから、両辺から 3 を引いて、3 を足したのを元に戻そう。
書き言葉・答案 A number is multiplied by 4, and then 5 is added. The result is 33. Work backwards to find the number. ある数に 4 を掛けてから 5 を足すと 33 になった。逆算して、もとの数を求めよ。
書き言葉・答案 Undo the addition first: 4x = 33 − 5 = 28, so x = 7. まず足し算を逆算する。4x = 33 − 5 = 28 より、x = 7。
言い間違えやすいところ
- undo は「元に戻す」（パソコンの「元に戻す」も undo）。1 つの操作を打ち消すことを言い、操作を最後から順にさかのぼる全体は work backwards と言う。
- 打ち消す順序は、行った操作の逆。4x + 5 = 33 では、掛け算より先に「5 を足す」を打ち消す。
- 「逆演算」は inverse operations。逆関数（inverse function、エントリ inverse-function）や逆数（reciprocal、エントリ reciprocal）とは別の語。
