日本の中 3 の教科書も、長方形の面積で式の展開を説明するが、図に決まった名前はない。英語でも IM は area diagram、ほかの教材では area model と呼び、呼び方は教材による。IM Grade 6 は分配法則や小数の掛け算の説明にこの図を使う。

定義
積を長方形の面積として表す図。辺をいくつかに分け、全体の面積を小さな長方形の面積の和として見ることで、分配法則や式の展開を説明する。
A diagram that shows a product as the area of a rectangle. The sides are split into parts, and the whole area is the sum of the areas of the smaller rectangles.
例文
話し言葉 Let's draw an area diagram: split one side into x and 3, and the other side into x and 2. 面積図をかこう。1 辺を x と 3 に、もう 1 辺を x と 2 に分ける。
書き言葉・答案 Draw an area diagram to show that 6(40 + 7) = 6 · 40 + 6 · 7. 6(40 + 7) = 6 × 40 + 6 × 7 であることを面積図で表せ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 同じ図を area model と呼ぶ教材もある。IM は area diagram と呼ぶ。
- 因数分解の box method は、同じ長方形の図を逆向きに使い、面積の和から辺の長さ（因数）を求める方法。
