定義
実数 x に対し、x 以上の最小の整数 ⌈x⌉ を対応させる関数のこと。たとえば ⌈2.3⌉ = 3、⌈−2.3⌉ = −2 である。
The function that sends a real number x to the smallest integer greater than or equal to x, written ⌈x⌉. For example, ⌈2.3⌉ = 3 and ⌈−2.3⌉ = −2.
例文
話し言葉 The ceiling function always rounds up, so the ceiling of 4.1 is 5, but the ceiling of 4 is just 4. 天井関数はつねに切り上げる。だから ⌈4.1⌉ = 5 だが、⌈4⌉ は 4 のままだ。
書き言葉・答案 A bus holds 40 students. Use the ceiling function to write the number of buses needed for n students, and evaluate it for n = 130. バス 1 台には生徒が 40 人乗れる。生徒 n 人に必要なバスの台数を天井関数で表し、n = 130 のときの値を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本の高校のガウス記号 [x] は x 以下の最大の整数（床関数 ⌊x⌋）で、天井関数ではない。⌈x⌉ と ⌊x⌋ の向きに注意。
- 負の数では 0 に近いほうへ上がる。⌈−2.3⌉ = −2 で、−3 ではない。
- 用例コーパスでは話し言葉（MIT OCW）にも書き言葉（OpenStax Calculus）にもほとんど出てこない。英語版 Wikipedia は床関数と 1 つの記事（Floor and ceiling functions）で扱う。
