母集団の分布にかかわらず、標本の大きさ n が大きいとき、標本平均の分布は正規分布で近似できるという定理。
The theorem that, for a large sample size n, the sample mean is approximately normally distributed no matter what shape the population has.
例文
話し言葉 By the central limit theorem, with n equals 50, the sample mean is approximately normal. 中心極限定理により、n = 50 なら標本平均はほぼ正規分布に従う。

言い間違えやすいところ
- 略して CLT と書く（OpenStax Introductory Statistics、AP Statistics の CED topic 2.12）。
- 標本の大きさの目安を AP Statistics の CED（topic 4.1）は n ≥ 30、OpenStax Introductory Statistics（7 章の導入）は at least 30 とする（CED は母集団の分布が極端にゆがんでいればもっと大きな n が要ると書く）。
