定義
平均 μ を中心に左右対称な釣り鐘形の確率密度関数をもつ連続型の確率分布。N(μ, σ²) と書く。
A continuous probability distribution with a symmetric, bell-shaped density centered at the mean μ; written N(μ, σ²).
例文
話し言葉 Heights are roughly normally distributed, so we can use the 68-95-99.7 rule. 身長はほぼ正規分布に従うので、68–95–99.7 の法則が使える。
書き言葉・答案 X follows a normal distribution with mean 50 and standard deviation 10. Find P(X > 65). X は平均 50、標準偏差 10 の正規分布に従う。P(X > 65) を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 学習指導要領解説（数学B）は N(μ, σ²) と分散を書くが、OpenStax Introductory Statistics（6.1）は X ~ N(μ, σ) と標準偏差を書く（同じ本の巻末の公式集は X ~ N(μ, σ²)）。記号を見たら 2 つ目が分散か標準偏差かを確かめる。
- 「正規分布に従う」は follows a normal distribution か is normally distributed。
- 平均から ±1σ・±2σ・±3σ の範囲に約 68%・95%・99.7% が入ることを empirical rule（68-95-99.7 rule）と言う（AP Statistics の CED topic 2.11）。
