二次方程式 ax²+bx+c=0 の b²−4ac のこと。符号で実数解の個数が決まる。

The quantity b²−4ac attached to ax²+bx+c=0; its sign tells you how many real solutions there are.

例文

話し言葉 The discriminant is negative, so there are no real solutions. 判別式が負なので実数解はありません。
書き言葉・答案 Since b² − 4ac = 0, the equation has a double root. b²−4ac=0 より、この方程式は重解をもつ。

  • 共通テスト・センター試験（数学II）の問題文は「判別式を D とすると」と置き（平成 28・31 年度 第4問、令和 5 年度 第4問）、日本語版 Wikipedia「判別式」も D で表記する。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は二次方程式の判別式に文字を置かず b² − 4ac のまま the discriminant と呼び、OpenStax Calculus Volume 3 は円錐曲線や 2 変数関数の判別式を D と置く。
