日本語の「取り出す」は中から外へ出す一般の動詞だが、英語の確率の問題では、袋から玉やカードを取り出すことを draw と言う（draw a marble from the bag、draw a card）。「無作為に取り出す」は draw at random。取り出したものを戻すかどうかは with replacement ／ without replacement で言い分ける（エントリ sampling-with-replacement、sampling-without-replacement）。
定義
袋や箱の中から、玉やカードなどを中を見ずに取り出す。
To take an object such as a marble or a card out of a bag, box, or deck without looking, so that the result is random.
例文
話し言葉 Draw a marble, write down its color, and put it back before you draw again. 玉を 1 個取り出して色を書きとめたら、次を取り出す前に袋に戻して。
書き言葉・答案 A bag contains 4 red marbles and 6 blue marbles. Two marbles are drawn one at a time without replacement. Find the probability that both marbles are red. 袋の中に赤玉 4 個と青玉 6 個が入っている。この袋から玉を 1 個ずつ 2 回取り出す。ただし、取り出した玉は袋に戻さない。2 個とも赤玉である確率を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- draw には「（図やグラフを）かく」の意味もある（エントリ draw-a-graph）。draw a card は「カードを 1 枚引く」、draw a line は「直線をひく」。
- 過去形は drew、過去分詞は drawn（Two cards are drawn from the deck.）。
- 取り出したものを戻すかどうかは、draw の後に with replacement ／ without replacement を付けて言う（draw two cards without replacement）。戻すかどうかで確率が変わる。
