同値関係 ~ のもとで、元 a と同値な元をすべて集めた集合のこと。[a] と書き、異なる同値類どうしは共通の元をもたない。
The set of all elements that are equivalent to a given element a under an equivalence relation, written [a]. Two different equivalence classes never share an element.
例文
話し言葉 Under congruence mod 3, the equivalence class of 1 is every integer that leaves a remainder of 1 when you divide by 3. 3 を法とする合同では、1 の同値類は 3 で割って 1 余る整数全体だ。
書き言葉・答案 Define a ~ b on ℤ if a ≡ b (mod 4). Find the equivalence class [3] and the number of distinct equivalence classes. ℤ 上の関係を a ≡ b (mod 4) のとき a ~ b と定める。同値類 [3] と、異なる同値類の個数を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 同値類全体は集合の分割（partition）になる。同値類全体の集合は商集合（quotient set）で、A/~ と書く。
- mod n の同値類は日本語で「剰余類」とも呼び、英語では residue class や congruence class とも言う。
- 用例コーパスでは MIT だけに出てきて、話し言葉（MIT OCW）のほうが書き言葉（MIT の講義ノート）より多い。Levin の本では 19 件（2.6 Relations and Graphs ほか）。
