定義
反射律・対称律・推移律の 3 つをみたす二項関係のこと。集合を、互いに同値な元どうしの組（同値類）に分ける。
A relation on a set that is reflexive, symmetric, and transitive. It splits the set into groups of elements that are equivalent to each other.
例文
話し言葉 Congruence mod 5 is an equivalence relation, so it breaks the integers into five classes. 5 を法とする合同は同値関係なので、整数全体を 5 つの類に分ける。
書き言葉・答案 Let R be the relation on ℤ defined by a R b if a − b is even. Determine whether R is an equivalence relation, and justify your answer. 整数全体の集合 ℤ 上の関係 R を、a − b が偶数のとき a R b と定める。R が同値関係であるかどうかを調べ、理由を述べよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 3 つの性質は形容詞で言う（R is reflexive / symmetric / transitive）。米国の Geometry で習う reflexive property などは、等号や合同についての同じ性質の名前。
- 日本の高校で習う「命題 p と q は同値」は equivalent（論理の同値）で、同値関係（equivalence relation）とは別の話。
- 用例コーパスでは MIT だけに出てきて、話し言葉（MIT OCW）と書き言葉（MIT の講義ノート）が同じくらい。Levin の本では 37 件（2.6 Relations and Graphs ほか）。
