連立一次方程式を行階段形にしたとき、ピボットのない列に対応する変数。任意の値をとれるパラメータになる。
In a row-reduced linear system, a variable whose column has no pivot; it can take any value and acts as a parameter.
例文
話し言葉 x3 is a free variable, so set it equal to t and solve for the others. x3 は自由変数なので t とおいて、ほかの変数を求める。
書き言葉・答案 Identify the free variables and write the general solution in parametric form. 自由変数を答え、一般解をパラメータ表示で書け。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 台帳の langlink（自由変数と束縛変数 → Free variables and bound variables）は論理学の自由変数で、別の概念。Levin の free variable も論理学の意味。
- Nicholson（1.2）は nonleading variable（先頭の 1 の無い列の変数）と書き、それを free variable とも呼ぶ。自由変数に置く新しい文字（s、t）は parameter と呼ぶ。
