あることがらが、どんなときにも決して起こらないこと。決して起こらないことがらの確率は 0 である。
Never able to happen. An event that is impossible has a probability of 0.
例文
話し言葉 You can't roll an 8 on a regular die, so that's impossible, and the probability is 0. ふつうのさいころで 8 の目は出ないから、それは決して起こらないことで、確率は 0。
書き言葉・答案 Two dice are rolled. Explain why getting a sum of 13 is impossible, and find its probability. 2 個のさいころを投げる。出た目の和が 13 になることが決して起こらない理由を説明し、その確率を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- どんな確率 p も 0 ≦ p ≦ 1。計算した確率が負になったり 1 を超えたりしたら、どこかが間違っている。
- 確率が小さくて起こりにくいこと（unlikely）と、決して起こらないこと（impossible、確率 0）を区別する。
- 日本語の「決して起こらない」は動詞の形だが、英語の impossible は形容詞で、It is impossible to roll an 8. ／ The event is impossible. のように使う。
