試行の結果のうち、ある条件に当てはまるものの集まり。全事象（起こりうる結果全体の集合）の部分集合である。
A set of outcomes of an experiment, such as rolling an even number on a die. An event is a subset of the sample space.
例文
話し言葉 Rolling an even number is an event, and it's made up of three outcomes: 2, 4, and 6. 偶数の目が出るというのは 1 つの事象で、2、4、6 の 3 つの結果でできている。
書き言葉・答案 A card is drawn from a standard 52-card deck. Let A be the event that the card is a heart. Find P(A). ジョーカーを除く 52 枚のトランプから 1 枚を取り出す。取り出したカードがハートである事象を A とするとき、P(A) を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日常語の event は「行事・出来事・イベント」。確率の event は結果の集まり（集合）で、1 つ 1 つの結果（outcome、エントリ elementary-event）とは区別する。
- 「全事象」は event を使わず sample space（エントリ sample-space）と言う。「A の余事象」は the complement of A（エントリ complementary-event）。
- 「事象 A が起こる」は event A occurs（エントリ occur）。
