定義
事象 A に対して、「A が起こらない」という事象のこと。標本空間の根元事象のうち、A に含まれないもの全体からなる。
The event that A does not happen: it contains exactly the outcomes of the sample space that A leaves out, and its probability is 1 − P(A).
例文
話し言葉 It's easier to find the probability of the complement of the event and subtract it from one. 余事象の確率を求めて 1 から引くほうが楽だ。
書き言葉・答案 Two dice are rolled. Let A be the event that the sum is at least 4. Describe the complement of the event A, and use it to find P(A). 2 個のさいころを投げる。目の和が 4 以上である事象を A とする。A の余事象を述べ、それを用いて P(A) を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 記号が違う。センター試験の問題文（平成 30 年度 数学Ⅰ・数学Ａ）は余事象を Ā と書き、学習指導要領解説も P(Ā) = 1 − P(A) と書く。OpenStax Introductory Statistics は A′、Algebra and Trigonometry は E′ と書く（教科書による）。
- 互いに排反（mutually exclusive）な 2 つの事象でも、合わせて標本空間全体にならなければ余事象どうしではない。
- 用例コーパスでは、書き言葉では complement of an event の形（OpenStax Introductory Statistics・Algebra and Trigonometry）のほうが多く、complementary event は話・書ともほとんど出てこない。
