A complement (or A bar)
定義
全体集合 U の要素のうち、集合 A に属さないもの全体の集合。
The set of all elements of the universal set U that are not in A.
例文
話し言葉 The complement of A is just everything in U that's not in A. A の補集合は、U の中で A に入っていないもの全部だ。
書き言葉・答案 Let U be the set of integers from 1 to 20 and A the set of multiples of 3 in U. Find the complement of A. 1 から 20 までの整数全体を U、そのうち 3 の倍数全体を A とする。A の補集合を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 高等学校学習指導要領解説（数学I）は集合の記号として Ā（A の補集合）を挙げ、共通テスト（令和 4 年度 数学I ほか）は「X の補集合を X̄ と表す」と書く。英語の本の記号は分かれる: OpenStax Introductory Statistics は A′、Algebra and Trigonometry は E′、Levin は Ā と書き、英語版 Wikipedia「Complement (set theory)」は Aᶜ も挙げる。
- 同じ complement が余事象（complement of an event）にも使われ、complementary angle（余角）という形でも出てくる。
- つづりは complement（補う）。compliment（ほめ言葉）と取り違えない。
